Earlier today, Rangers FC announced the signing of Rabbi Matondo, who was also a target for Celtic and Leeds.

What’s the story?

Well, it was said that Celtic held talks with Schalke 04 over a deal for the Wales international.

Elsewhere, some then claimed that Jesse Marsch had joined both Celtic and Rangers in the race to sign Matondo, as the American aimed to improve his options at Leeds United FC.

Now, however, both he and Ange Postecoglou will have to look elsewhere.

As announced by Rangers, Matondo has signed a four-year contract at Ibrox, and while they do not disclose the fee, it is believed to be worth £1.8m – a bargain, considering Schalke 04 paid £11m for his services.

The 21-year-old joins Giovanni van Bronckhorst in Glasgow after scoring ten goals in 27 appearances for Cercle Bruges last term, while also providing two assists during his season-long loan.

In our view, Matondo will shine at Ibrox.

For those of you who don’t know much about the Liverpool-born winger, a comparison to a more popular player may be helpful.

Interestingly, Matondo has been compared to Bayern Munich winger Leroy Sane, who used to dominate the Premier League during his days at Manchester City.

The Welshman has also been described as “incredibly fast” by Pep Guardiola of all people, so he certainly has pedigree.

Matondo himself even admitted to rejecting Liverpool and Tottenham back in 2016, so he is a winger of real potential, to say the very least.

It will be intriguing to see if Matondo can replace Joe Aribo in terms of goalscoring, but with all things considered, we believe he will star in Scotland.

If he does, it will be even sweeter for Rangers, knowing that Celtic also wanted to bring Matondo to Glasgow.
