Celtic and Rangers want Rabbi Matondo with both clubs opening talks to secure the signing of the Schalke winger this summer.

The two Glasgow clubs are known for their on-pitch battles but it now looks like they will fight it out off the pitch too.

We regularly see players being linked with both Celtic and Rangers; sometimes with truth, sometimes as agents look to pit the two clubs against each other.

There is now a new case as both Celtic and Rangers are understood to be very keen on signing Welsh talent Matondo.

Celtic and Rangers want Rabbi Matondo

Wales Online report that Celtic and Rangers have initiated talks to bring Matondo to Glasgow this summer.

It’s stated that Schalke are prepared to sell Matondo this summer as they look to cash in on a promising spell in Belgium.

Matondo hit 10 goals and two assists in 27 outings on loan at Cercle Brugge this past season, and they want to sign him permanently.

Club Brugge have joined the race having seen huge potential in the 21-year-old winger.

Yet whilst there is a battle in Bruges for Matondo, there now appears to be grappling in Glasgow too.

Matondo, 21, primarily plays as a right-sided winger and has picked up 10 caps for Wales on the international stage.

Matondo was once a hot prospect on the Manchester City books and Pep Guardiola praised him for being ‘incredibly fast’.

The winger decided to leave City in January 2019 though, making an £11million move to Schalke as he looked to emulate Jadon Sancho.

Whilst Sancho became a star in Germany after leaving City, the same hasn’t happened for Matondo, who has managed just two goals in 32 games for Schalke.

Now available this summer, Matondo has interest from Celtic and Rangers but who needs him more?

Celtic do already have a star right winger in Liel Abada, and Matondo would surely need James Forrest to move on if he is to accept a move to Parkhead.

Rangers need more attacking firepower with Ianis Hagi still out for a while yet and Matondo could be a real upgrade on similar speedsters Fashion Sakala and Scott Wright.

A move to Ibrox may make a little more sense for Matondo as things stand, but Celtic will be a huge threat having revitalised the likes of Jota and Cameron Carter-Vickers, who seemed to be in similar positions to Matondo last summer.
