Can Mudryk play in the Champions League for Chelsea? Many have been asking on Google after the Blues struck a deal with Shakhtar Donetsk.

The west Londoners surprisingly hijacked Arsenal’s move for the Ukraine international just as it seemed he was on his way to the Emirates Stadium.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the 22-year-old has now completed his medical with Chelsea, and will sign a contract running until June 2030 with the Blues paying a total sum of €100m (£89m).

The Ukrainian wonderkid will be in attendance today as Chelsea take on Crystal Palace at Stamford Bridge.

Yes – Mudryk can play in the Champions League for Chelsea this season.

Despite making six appearances for Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League this season, Mudryk is still eligible to take part in a UEFA competition for another side in the second half of the campaign.

The Ukrainian is not cup tied as UEFA rules state that three new players can be registered for the knockout stages of their competitions, as long as the paperwork is submitted by February 2nd.

UEFA’s official website states: “As of the round of 16, a club may register a maximum of three new eligible players for the remaining matches in the current competition. Such registration must be completed by 2nd February 2023 at the latest. This deadline cannot be extended.

“Any or all of the players from the above quota of three may have been fielded for another club in the qualifying phase, play-offs or group stage of the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League or UEFA Europa Conference League.”

That will be music to the ears of Graham Potter, as Mudryk has been superb in the Champions League this season.

The Krasnohrad-born sensation has scored three goals while also providing two assists in six Champions League outings for Shakhtar Donetsk this term, including a rocket of a strike against Celtic in a 1-1 draw at Celtic Park.

Chelsea begin their journey in the Champions League Knockout Phase with a Round of 16 clash against Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday 15th February at the Signal Iduna Park.
