Arsenal and Leeds are both keen to sign Matheus Cunha from Atlético Madrid – a player who has been likened to Roberto Firmino.

It was David Ornstein of The Athletic who revealed that Mikel Arteta has taken an interest in the Brazil international, as the Spaniard aims to find a replacement for Gabriel Jesus, who is set to spend three months on the sidelines.

Elsewhere, it was a story from Relevo which revealed that Leeds are huge admirers of Cunha, and would like to bring the striker to Elland Road.

What’s the story?

Well, whoever wins the race to sign Cunha will be getting a fantastic footballer.

The South American made a name for himself at RB Leipzig and then at Hertha Berlin, once scoring a majestic goal which was arguably worthy of winning the Puskas award.

You can see that particular strike below.

Cunha’s efforts earned him a €25m (£21m) move to Atlético Madrid in 2021, although the South American has struggled under the defensively minded Diego Simeone, similarly to Joao Felix.

The 23-year-old has scored just seven goals in 54 appearances for the Spanish giants, although Arsenal and Leeds clearly believe that poor return is down to Simeone’s tactics, rather than the Brazilian’s ability.

Arsenal or Leeds could sign Firmino 2.0

Given his age and lack of success at Atlético Madrid, you may not know too much about Cunha.

Therefore, a comparison to a Premier League regular may be useful.

Interestingly, the Bundesliga’s official website have likened Cunha to Liverpool No.9 Firmino.

They write that the Brazilian duo share “speed, skill” and “intelligence” which allows them to be effective in any position across the frontline.

It is also said that Cunha, like Firmino, is comfortable at dropping deep into midfield to help link the play.

Be sure to keep an eye on this situation, as Cunha could soon be moving to the Premier League.
