Arsenal are reportedly keen on signing an Argentine midfielder this summer as the Gunners step up their plans for the new season.

Riccardo Calafiori is flying in to undergo his medical at Arsenal, with the signing of the Italian representing the first piece of major business done by the club this season.

A new midfielder now looks to be the next name on the list for Arsenal with Emile Smith Rowe closing in on an exit from the Emirates Stadium with a move to Fulham in the pipeline.

Mikel Merino is one name who manager Mikel Arteta likes this summer but reports from Argentine have linked the Gunners with another name.

Arsenal keen on Boca Juniors’ Ezequiel Fernández

Arsenal have been yet to really explore the South American market in recent seasons with Gabriel Martinelli perhaps the last young player from that region to move to the Emirates Stadium.

However, that could well be changing with Argentine journalist Diego Monroig telling Bolavip that Arsenal are indeed keen on Boca Juniors midfielder Ezequiel Fernandez.

The journalist claims Fernández’s entourage have ‘received information’ that the Gunners want to secure the 22-year-old’s services in this window.

Arsenal will have to act fast if they want to sign the Argentine midfielder with Saudi side Al-Qadsiah having already made an attempt to sign him. The Saudi club have reportedly tabled a $17m [£13.2m] offer, but it wasn’t accepted by Boca Juniors.

Fernandez compared to Liverpool ace Alexis Mac Allister

The 22-year-old has made a big impact for Boca Juniors with the Argentine making 20 appearances in all competitions, scoring two goals and providing one assist.

During his time at Brighton & Hove Albion, Argentine midfielder Alexis Mac Allister was keen to praise Fernandez and even compared his own game to the 22-year-old’s.

“If you ask me a little more about my style, there is a player that I really like and that is Equi Fernandez,” the Argentine World Cup winner told TyC Sport.

“He is a player who has all the conditions to reach Europe one day and I hope that can happen to him.”

With the midfielder having a contract at Boca that does not expire until December 2028, Arsenal may have to stump up more than the £13 million put on the table by Saudi side Al-Qadsiah.
