HITC understands that Mikel Merino is continuing talks with interested parties this summer, including Arsenal, about a move.

Arsenal were previously keen on Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi but HITC reported that the Gunners were prepared to pivot away from Zubimendi due to their belief he preferred a move to Real Madrid or Barcelona.

HITC reported earlier this month that Arsenal have turned their attention to another Real Sociedad midfielder in Mikel Merino.

Merino is keen on departing Sociedad this summer and Mikel Arteta is understood to be a big fan of the former Newcastle United midfielder.

Arsenal’s plan explained after Calafiori deal

Arsenal are on the verge of completing the deal to sign Riccardo Calafiori after the Italian was given the greenlight to undergo a medical.

Sources have told HITC that the Gunners will move on to midfield and forward targets once the club confirm the signing of the Italian defender Calafiori.

Arsenal were frustrated in their attempts to sign RB Leipzig forward Benjamin Sesko with the Slovenian choosing to sign a new contract at the German club, although there is a release clause that becomes active in 2025 in his contract.

Before Arsenal move for their preferred midfield or forward targets, sales may have to be made.

Fulham have matched Arsenal’s price tag for Emile Smith Rowe, whilst there is strong interest in Eddie Nketiah and Reiss Nelson from at home and abroad.

Arsenal may need these sales before they make a move for Merino.

Arteta believes Merino would fit perfectly in system

Zubimendi was understood to be the club’s first choice, but Merino has always been held in high regard by Arteta and the club during his time at Real Sociedad.

Although these players are certainly comparable, they are certainly different from one another but Arteta is understood to believe that Merino would fit perfectly in his system.

One midfielder who the Gunners have decided not to get involved in is Portuguese midfielder Joao Neves.

HITC had previously reported that Arsenal and Liverpool liked SL Benfica’s Neves but sources understand that the Gunners will not be drawn in a battle with Paris Saint-Germain, with the talented midfielder set to seal a move to the Parc Des Princes.
