Arsenal want Edson Alvarez and a player they have been offered – Florian Grillitsch – has now joined Ajax on a free transfer.
The Gunners won’t have been anticipating a busy end to the window but now need to get some business done.
Injuries to Thomas Partey and Mohamed Elneny mean that Arsenal are suddenly a little short in midfield.
Edu has a number of targets in mind and whilst a move for Aston Villa’s Douglas Luiz appears to be progressing, the Brazilian has alternatives.
Arsenal want Edson Alvarez
One name Arsenal have shown an interest in signing is Ajax ace Edson Alvarez.
90Min have reported that Arsenal fancy signing Alvarez as their new midfield anchor man.
The 24-year-old has impressed for Ajax and his price may only increase if he impresses for Mexico at the World Cup later this year.
Arsenal aren’t alone in the race for Alvarez though, with De Telegraaf claiming that a £43million bid has been submitted by Chelsea.
Alvarez wants to go to England but Ajax chiefs continue to tell him that a deal is not happening, as De Telegraaf have noted today.
The interesting part here is that Ajax have now confirmed the signing of a new midfielder.
Austrian international Florian Grillitsch has joined Ajax on a free transfer having left Hoffenheim at the end of his contract this summer.
This appears to be a real coup for Ajax, as Grillitsch has attracted interest from around Europe since his contract ended.
90Min claimed earlier this week that Grillitsch had been offered to Arsenal as a potential solution to their midfield woes.
Instead of heading to North London though, Grillitsch has joined Ajax.
That move may leave some to wonder whether a late move for Alvarez really is possible, as Grillitsch could feasibly replace the Mexican in midfield.
We would still make Chelsea favourites over Arsenal if Alvarez is to leave Ajax today, but this development may just tempt Edu into a late bid.
