Ashley Williams joined Everton from Swansea City in the summer of 2016.
Much was made of Ashley Williams when Everton signed the Wales international defender Swansea City in the summer of 2016 for a transfer fee reported by BBC Sport to be worth £12 million.
The central defender had established himself as an accomplished defender in the Premier League and was playing well for Swansea, and since Everton needed to sign a defender, it made perfect sense, especially for a (reported) price of just £12m.
It was supposed to be sort of a coup, signing an international defender in his early 30s who had helped his country reach the semi-finals of the European Championship.
However, the performances of Williams for Everton, especially this season, are proof why the likes of Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool did not sign him.
Williams is struggling to play well for the Toffees this season and is making mistakes that a top-quality defender should not.
The former Hednesford Town defender was also sent off against Burnley last weekend, and Everton fans have complained about his performances on more than one occasions this season (click here and here to read more).
Although it would be premature to write off Williams, perhaps it would be wise of Everton to start looking for a younger and better defender to sign in the summer of 2018.
