England’s wide options have been criticised during the 2026 World Cup but Anthony Gordon made history in their win over DR Congo.
It would perhaps be fair to say that neither Gordon nor Marcus Rashford have covered themselves in glory so far during the tournament.
What would you do with Anthony Gordon against Mexico? Start or utilise him off the bench?
He changed the game for England with those assists 🔥
Both have been criticised by supporters on social media, although Rashford did score against Croatia in the group stages.
Thomas Tuchel started Rashford against DR Congo as England came from behind to progress into the last 16, but it was Gordon who stepped up.
Gordon the first English World Cup player to record two assists from the bench
Gordon, who joined Catalan giants Barcelona from Newcastle United before the tournament got underway, entered the fray in the 61st minute.
While, clearly, England’s progression was largely thanks to star striker Harry Kane, Gordon’s role in the turnaround cannot be forgotten.
The 25-year-old teed up both of Kane’s goals. The first was a lovely cross to allow Kane to head England back onto level terms, while the second showcased Gordon’s quick feet.
Interestingly enough, that was the first time an England player had come off the bench during a World Cup game to record two assists.
It will now be fascinating to see if Gordon starts for his country next time out.

Indeed, England are due to travel to Mexico City to play co-hosts Mexico at the famous Estadio Azteca.
It’s a daunting challenge and England will no doubt have to improve but there were certainly signs from Gordon that he is growing into the tournament.
The former Everton star, like many of his teammates, has not convinced during the tournament. Perhaps, however, his strong cameo against DR Congo will give him some much-needed confidence heading into the business end of the World Cup.
