Joe Garner has not enjoyed the best start to life with Glasgow Rangers, despite the fans taking to him almost immediately.

Ross County defender Andrew Davies has suggested that Rangers need to change their style if they want to get the very best out of Joe Garner, the Evening Times reports.

The £1.8 million signing (via Daily Record) is a popular figure amongst the Ibrox faithful due to his tireless displays, but it is safe to say that his record in front of goal has not been good enough since his arrival in the Scottish Premiership.

The 28-year-old has scored just three goals in 20 appearances for the Gers, and is without a goal since the end of October.

But Davies – whose Ross side earned a draw at Rangers at the weekend – believes that the summer signing is not being helped by the style of play that Mark Warburton insists his side use.

“If I was a manager, I would be saying mix it up and play a few long. They have got Garner up top, I played against him a lot in England and he is fantastic in the air,” he said, as reported by the Evening Times.

“To get the best out of him, you have to put balls in the box all the time, kick the ball long.

“That is his game. When they don’t, I think he struggles. That is my opinion.”

In terms of finances, Garner was arguably the Gers’ marquee addition during the summer so it is perhaps surprising that Warburton has not occasionally adopted a strategy that would get the best out of him.

While it would be understandable if the team was winning each week, the fact is that Rangers are struggling for any consistency – they have put together a four-match winning run in the league just once since getting promoted – so it is perhaps a surprise that Warburton has not tried to mix things up.

And Davies believes that it is only by doing that that Garner will get the chance to prove just how great an impact he can make for the Gers.
