Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool drew with Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City at Anfield on Sunday, and Gary Lineker has named the Anfield star who impressed him a lot.

Liverpool and Manchester City played out a hugely entertaining 1-1 draw with each other at Anfield in the Premier League on Sunday.

John Stones put defending Premier League champions Manchester City in the lead in the first half. Alexis Mac Allister restored parity for Liverpool from the penalty spot in the opening minutes of the second half.

Joe Gomez started the match at left-back for Liverpool after recovering from injury, and former Tottenham Hotspur striker Gary Lineker was hugely impressed by the different positions that the 26-year-old took on the pitch in the second half.

Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has noted that Gomez has become better this season.

The BBC Match of the Day pundit has said that the 26-year-old English defender had a mistake in him, but he has managed to cut that out of his game.

Gomez did not make the greatest of starts against City, with Phil Foden testing him, but he grew into the game and was sharper and more effective when he moved to right-back.

Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer comment on Liverpool defender Joe Gomez

Lineker said about Gomez on The Rest is Football podcast: “I have to say I was incredibly impressed with Joe Gomez yesterday, particularly in the second half.

“I mean, he was playing in all sorts of positions across the back-four, and he was also at times the inverted full-back, moving inside as well.”

Shearer noted: “He has been a lot better this season. I think there was always a mistake in him, wasn’t there?

“I think he is one of those where you think, if he is playing against me, then I am going to stand with him because he is going to give me something in the 90 minutes. At the minute, he has cut that out.”

My View: Joe Gomez is an important player for Liverpool

In my opinion, Joe Gomez has established himself as an important player for Liverpool.

I think that the defender has progressed and developed under manager Jurgen Klopp over the years.

Gomez is 26 now. His best years are ahead of him. He is an asset for Liverpool and will play a big role for the Reds in the coming weeks and months.

The Englishman has made 14 starts and 10 substitute appearances in the Premier League for Liverpool this season. He has given one assist in those games.
