Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal are level on points with Liverpool, but Jurgen Klopp’s side would have gone top had they won against Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City at Anfield this past weekend.
Arsenal beat Brentford 2-1 at the Emirates Stadium in North London in the Premier League on Saturday.
Aaron Ramsdale made one of the worst mistakes from a goalkeeper in the league this season, but the England international made two good saves in the second half to help Arsenal to a win in the London derby.
On Sunday, Liverpool and Manchester City locked horns with each other at Anfield. The match ended in a 1-1 draw.
Arsenal are now at the top of the Premier League table with 64 points from 28 matches, level on points with Liverpool, who are second. Defending champions Manchester City are third with 63 points.
Liverpool, though, would have gone top had they won against City. And some Anfield faithful will feel that they should have picked up all three points from the match.
Liverpool denied a penalty vs Manchester City at Anfield
Not only did Jurgen Klopp’s side dominate proceedings in the second half and had chances against City, but they were also controversially denied a penalty in injury time.

In the eighth minute of injury time, City winger Jeremy Doku caught Liverpool and Argentina international midfielder Alexis Mac Allister in the chest with a high boot.
As you would expect, Mac Allister went down in the area. There was a VAR check, and it was subsequently adjudged that Doku had got the ball first. No penalty was given.
Former Arsenal star Ray Parlour gives his verdict
Former Arsenal star Ray Parlour has given his verdict on the incident. The talkSPORT pundit thinks that Liverpool were wronged.
Parlour said on talkSPORT: “That’s the problem you have. You look back at it. I watched the highlights and, for me, it was a penalty. As much as I don’t want to say that because I want Arsenal to win it.”
I think that it was a penalty and I feel for the Liverpool fans. A win against City at home would have been a massive result.
But, there is nothing that Liverpool can do about it now. The Merseyside club have to simply move on.
