Tottenham Hotspur may be tempted to move for a left back this summer but Ajax’s Borna Sosa may have missed chance to make the move to North London.
Tottenham Hotspur have been trying to find a star left back since the Danny Rose days came to an end.
Sergio Reguilon impressed at first but fizzled out before Ivan Perisic arrived as a wing back under Antonio Conte.
The Croatian encountered a major injury last season before returning to Croatia with Hajduk Split.
The path was cleared for Destiny Udogie to shine at left back and the Italian took the opportunity.
Hailed as ‘electric to watch’ by Gary Neville, Udogie excelled last season and is on his way to becoming one of the top left backs in the Premier League.
Tottenham don’t have ideal competition for Udogie though and may be tempted to go into the market for another option.
Ajax stance on ex-Tottenham Hotspur target Borna Sosa
Ben Davies has been an outstanding servant to Tottenham over the last 10 years but he isn’t nearly as dynamic as Udogie.
Adding another left back who can come in and compete with Udogie could be ideal, but Spurs won’t want to splash big money on that signing.
Tottenham did, according to reports, have a target in mind at left back in March of 2023.
Croatian ace Borna Sosa was on Tottenham’s radar and reports suggested that talks had been opened over a possible deal from Stuttgart.
Sosa had become known for his delivery from the left flank and from set pieces, even earning comparisons to David Beckham.
Tottenham didn’t end up striking a deal though as Sosa instead signed for Dutch giants Ajax.
Sosa followed Sven Mislintat to Amsterdam but the move really hasn’t worked out.
The 26-year-old managed just 844 minutes of league action for Ajax last season with knocks, illness and pure selection decisions hampering his progress.
Sosa’s move is really turning sour now and reporter Christian Willaert claims that Sosa is training on his own as Ajax intend to move him on this summer.
Fotomac in Turkey now report that Besiktas have made a move to sign Sosa and end his rather disappointing year in Amsterdam.
Would Tottenham look at Sosa again?
Tottenham may be able to land something of a bargain if they went back in for Sosa this summer, with his Ajax career never really taking off.
It’s difficult to imagine Spurs making that kind of move now though.
The interest was rife before Ange Postecoglou’s arrival and before the appointment of Johan Lange as technical director.
Sosa may not be the best fit in terms of how Postecoglou uses his left backs; inverting and pushing them forward.
Sosa is better when he can stay wide and get crosses into the box, just as he did at Stuttgart.
The Croatian’s availability may have been registered inside Tottenham given that prior interest, but the ship has surely sailed on a move to Spurs.
