Borussia Monchengladbach want to sell reported Liverpool and Newcastle United target Matthias Ginter immediately to avoid the defender leaving in a free transfer this summer.

That’s according to Calciomercato, who report Die Fohlen want to cash in now after Ginter rejected signing a new contract. The German’s existing deal ends at the end of the season, but his Bundesliga side cannot make the 27-year-old an offer matching what he is seeking.

Ginter has also now fallen to the bench for the first time this season, given the uncertainty surrounding his future. Adi Hutter dropped the centre-half for Gladbach’s 2-1 loss at home to Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday. He had started 16 of their previous 18 top-flight fixtures.

Die Fohlen are desperate to prevent their €17m (£14m) signing from Borussia Dortmund in 2017 now leaving for free. So, Borussia Monchengladbach are asking for just €5m (£4m) to sell Ginter in January. Yet their valuation is currently pricing Inter Milan out of a transfer.

The Nerazzurri have Ginter on their shortlist of possible free summer signings, but are now moving away from his case. San Siro chiefs are only prepared to offer €3m (£2.5m) and are also reluctant to meet his wage demands. All in all, his route to Milan is rapidly decreasing.

Liverpool or Newcastle can seal cheap transfer for ‘undervalued’ Ginter

Prior reports by Calciomercato claimed Inter Milan refuse to pay Ginter more than €3m-a-year (£48k-a/w). However, the offer will fall below the wage he is chasing as a free agent.

The Nerazzurri’s stance could, therefore, increase the likelihood the Freiburg-native heads for England. Inter Live report Newcastle are very serious admirers and have the funds to tempt Ginter into accepting a transfer for once he leaves Borussia Monchengladbach.

Additionally, FC Inter News have more recently added Liverpool to the list of clubs eying a transfer for Borussia Monchengladbach enforcer Ginter. The Reds also lodged an enquiry to sound out his interest in a move to Anfield with Bayern Munich keen.

While Jurgen Klopp already has a wealth of centre-back options, he – or Eddie Howe at St James’ Park – would acquire a top option by beating Inter and Bayern to a deal for Ginter.

“I have the feeling that he’s undervalued by the public,” former Germany boss Joachim Low once said, via Bundesliga.com. “When he’s played with us, he’s always done his job well.”

“As a coach, you know what to expect from him,” Low added. “He’s dependable and he’s able to do what we want him to do, which is to help build the play up from the back.”
