Max Eberl has told Sport1 that Borussia Monchengladbach will look to spend wisely as their finances improve and want to renew the contract of Tottenham target Matthias Ginter.
The centre-half is a vital cog of the Fohlen system, but has just nine-months left on his deal at Borussia-Park. Sports Director Eberl admits the Bundesliga outfit have not been able to offer him an extension yet, after the pandemic heavily limited their budget.
However, with the gradual return of fans to stadiums in Germany, Monchengladbach are in a stronger position. Eberl now hopes to fend off growing interest in the £54k-a-week rock before the winter market as interest builds.
Reports by Calciomercato cite Tottenham, Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and Inter Milan as potential suitors if Ginter leaves Borussia Monchengladbach. Spurs, Inter and Real had also looked into signing the 27-year-old this summer, per Bild and Sky Germany.
Monchengladbach even rejected an offer from Tottenham in the summer as they fought to keep Ginter, despite his contract situation. Now, Eberl wants to reward the 44-cap German defender with a contract befitting a player with his status.
“Well, I wouldn’t have been ashamed or embarrassed, but we actually couldn’t make an adequate offer to Matthias Ginter as a German national player,” Eberl said. “We just didn’t have the financial means at the time.
“Now the season is running, spectators are coming again, and it’s a different calculation. Even if you have to calculate on the go. Now, we will try to use the money sensibly and appropriately for the players.”
Should Tottenham target Ginter amid uncertain Monchengladbach future?
Eberl and Borussia Monchengladbach will be loath to lose Ginter to Tottenham, Real, Inter or Bayern when his contract expires. He has started six of their seven Bundesliga fixtures so far this season, plus their DFB-Pokal first-round tie with Kaiserslautern.
Ginter only sat out Die Fohlen’s defeat to Union Berlin in August after testing positive for coronavirus, as well. He has only missed 11 of 143 German top-flight games since joining from Borussia Dortmund for €17m (£14.5m) in 2017.
While his performances this term have helped to beat BVB 1-0 and hold Bayern Munich to a 1-1 draw. And he will become increasingly key as Adi Hutter’s side have often struggled to score, increasing why Monchengladbach and Eberl want to keep Tottenham target Ginter.
