Bayern Munich and Real Madrid face competition from Tottenham Hotspur for World Cup winner Matthias Ginter who’s due to become a free agent in 2022, as reported by Calciomercato.

While Davinson Sanchez and Eric Dier began the Nuno Espirito Santo era resembling a convincing tribute act to peak-era Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen – keeping clean sheets against Manchester City, Wolves and Watford – a lack of depth at centre-half was exposed ruthlessly during Saturday’s reality-check defeat at Crystal Palace.

With Sanchez in quarantine and Dier limping out with only a few minutes on the clock, Tottenham were thumped 3-0 by a dominant, free-flowing Palace side playing their most eye-catching football in recent memory.

Doubts persist over Joe Rodon’s Premier League potential while Japhet Tanganga, who performed so well at right-back in the early weeks of the season, showed he still has a lot of growing up to do with a silly red card after being whipped into a frenzy by a hot-stepping Wilf Zaha.

And with reports claiming Tottenham are already looking at a deal for Borussia Monchengladbach ace Ginter, it seems Nuno, Fabio Paratici and co have identified the defence as an area in need of improvement.

Could Matthias Ginter end up at Tottenham?

The former Dortmund stopper is out of contract in 2022, his availability catching the eye of Bayern Munich and a Real Madrid side that failed to replace Sergio Ramos and Raphael Varane before September’s transfer deadline.

“Ginter has become a leader at the back in a similar way to Ramos at Real,” Germany legend Lothar Matthaus said last year of a man who could succeed the Los Blancos legend at the Santiago Bernabeu.

“He doesn’t just give instructions to his teammates but leads them as well. That’s what Ginter is doing really well at the moment. He reminds me of Ramos.”

Ginter, who has also been linked with Arsenal and Liverpool, worked under Jurgen Klopp for a while at Dortmund and was labelled “talented” by a man who once paid £9 million for his services.
