Matthias Ginter has claimed, via Kicker, that he expects to open discussions with Borussia Monchengladbach over a new contract, following interest from Liverpool and Tottenham.
The German is in the final 10-months of his existing terms and is yet to hear anything from Die Fohlen over extending his stay at Borussia-Park. Ginter joined Monchengladbach from Borussia Dortmund for an initial €17m (£14.5m) in 2017 on a contract worth £54k-a-week.
He has been a fixture of the defensive line since switching between Bundesliga outfits, with 151 appearances across all competitions. Ginter has also scored 10 goals and offered five assists, while serving as the leader of the Monchengladbach backline.

Liverpool and Tottenham had explored Ginter’s situation at Borussia Monchengladbach as they looked to strengthen during the summer transfer window. Bild reported in May that the Reds, plus Inter Milan and RB Leipzig were keen, while Spurs made an offer.
Reports by Sky Germany added Barcelona, Real and Atletico Madrid also approached his agent to discuss moving to Spain. While Bayer Leverkusen considered tabling a €20m (£17m) offer as Ginter’s contract discussions persisted without any breakthroughs.
Borussia Monchengladbach and Ginter have since postponed talks about an extension, but the Liverpool and Tottenham summer target now expects they will soon recommence.
“I’m the wrong person to talk to,” Ginter said. “I haven’t heard anything yet. But I assume that there will be an exchange in the next few weeks.”
Ginter to rule out 2022 Liverpool or Tottenham switch with Monchengladbach deal?
Ginter signing a new contract with Borussia Monchengladbach would likely rule out a 2022 deal to join Liverpool or Tottenham. The Premier League rivals may retain an interest in the German following their considerations, given his contract expires next June.
Liverpool improved their backline this summer with Ibrahima Konate, but could struggle to turn down Ginter for free. Tottenham, meanwhile, also signed a centre-back in Cristian Romero, but football.london noted they remained in the market to acquire another.
Ultimately, though, Spurs did not strengthen Nuno Espirito’s defence after loaning the Argentine from Atalanta. And as Ginter – who former Germany boss Joachim Low claims is ‘undervalued’, via Bundesliga.com – has been a mainstay at Borussia Monchengladbach, his abilities may remain in high-regard at Tottenham or Liverpool.
