Newcastle United target Darwin Nunez scored a hat-trick for Benfica yesterday, just two days after reports that Eddie Howe’s side are now in talks to sign him.

Nunez to Newcastle?

Nunez hit three goals in Benfica’s 4-1 victory over Famalicao, which suggests that speculation linking him with St. James’ Park hasn’t impacted on his form.

Nunez now has 14 goals in 19 games this season, and it is easy to see why Newcastle are seemingly taking a look at him.

Mais Futebol said two days ago that Newcastle are prepping a bid for the clinical striker and have already made contact with Benfica over signing him in a £43 million deal.

If they were to bring him to Tyneside in January then he could well be the difference between relegation and survival.

Newcastle would have plenty of firepower to build their team around if Nunez and Callum Wilson linked up together in attack.

Wilson is a proven Premier League striker and one of the stars of Newcastle’s team.

But Nunez would arrive at St. James’ Park full of confidence, as he is one of the most in-form strikers in Europe, and at the age of 22 he still has plenty of room for improvement.

Would Nunez join?

The question for Newcastle would surely be over whether Nunez would be prepared to join them.

He has been playing Champions League football for Benfica this season and his form hasn’t gone unnoticed by higher placed clubs.

If he continues to bang in hat-tricks until the new year he is only set to become even more in demand too.

And, even despite all their riches, Nunez still looks a very ambitious transfer target for Newcastle, while they sit in the Premier League’s relegation zone.
