According to Mais Futebol, Newcastle have held a meeting with Benfica over the signing of Darwin Nunez, who’s also a target for Liverpool.
What’s the story?
Well, this is a big development for Newcastle, as they attempt to sign one of the most prolific strikers in Europe right now.
Mais Futebol believe the Magpies have spoken to the Portuguese giants, who made it clear that Nunez would not be leaving for under €50m (£43m).
That may seem like a lot, but it’s actually quite the discount when you consider that the 22-year-old has a €150m (£128m) release clause.
Benfica are willing to sell Nunez, although they would prefer to wait until the summer according to Mais Futebol.
It was the Daily Star who revealed that Liverpool are interested in the 6-cap Uruguay international, who is also a target for Manchester City.
Clearly, Newcastle have a battle on their hands if they’re to win the race for Nunez, who has scored 11 goals in 18 games this season.
What can Darwin Nunez offer Newcastle or Liverpool?

Nunez has shone so far this season, but he’s still far from being a household name in football.
In that respect, a comparison to a better known player may be of use.
If that is the case, then you may be interested to know that Nunez has been compared to Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani.

The Benfica man’s agent, Edgardo Lasalvia, told FC Inter News: “Darwin is ready to play for any team on the globe. (He and Cavani) have a lot of things in common. We are convinced that Darwin is destined for great things.”
Cavani has scored 359 goals throughout his trophy-laden career, so if Nunez can become even 50% of the player, he’s worth signing for Newcastle or Liverpool.
Keep an eye on this saga, as Benfica are happy to sell.
