Michael Owen still thinks Arsenal are the real deal and if he was a fan of the club then he would be ‘absolutely buoyant’ about what they can do this season in the Premier League despite their defeat to Everton.

Mikel Arteta’s side were dealt a blow to their Premier League title chances on Saturday when Sean Dyche-inspired Everton recorded a deserved 1-0 win at Goodison Park.

Heading into the match, Arsenal had only lost one game this season, so bearing that in mind, they are allowed an off-day.

The issue for them is that it’s going to raise the question ‘is this the start of Arsenal’s blip?’

Well, with Manchester City in north London on Sunday where they will take on Tottenham, the current champions have the chance to close the gap at the top to two points, but Arteta’s men have a game in hand.

If that happens, then it will get the heart beating faster, but for Owen, who previously backed Arsenal, he is still backing those at the Emirates and refuses to change his mind, as he told Premier League Productions (04/02/23 at 2:50 pm).

“I don’t think so (that doubts will start to creep in,” said Owen. “I think your eyes don’t lie. I think what we have seen is a different Arsenal team this season.

“Every team has their off day. Every team gets beat from time to time. But this is a totally different Arsenal team from what we saw five-ten years ago. This is a tough team.

“They withstood a lot. They had a lot thrown at them. They conceded one goal, from a set piece. There were circumstances where they could have avoided it, don’t get me wrong.

“If I was an Arsenal fan, then I would be absolutely buoyant about what this season could offer.”

ARSENAL’S RESPONSE

When Arsenal suffered their first defeat of the season – away at Old Trafford – they backed it up by winning game after game again.

This is a small blip for the Gunners and they just need to, however they do it, put those three points back up on the board against Brentford next week.

Do that, then the defeat to Everton will all be forgotten about and they can focus on going into the Manchester City game later on this month with momentum.
