Stephen Kelly wants Tottenham Hotspur to secure the transfer of Croatia and RB Leipzig star Josko Gvardiol during the January transfer window.
The former Tottenham defender added that Gvardiol, who was one of the stars of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, is ‘young and aggressive’ and the 20-year-old would fit in on the left-hand side for Antonio Conte.
Despite Spurs picking up a much-needed three points and a clean sheet during their 4-0 win over Crystal Palace on Wednesday night, the problems are still there for the club.
Conte has been sending out transfer pleas, as he seemingly wants backing so he can take the club to the next level.
The level of ambition for those upstairs at Hotspur Way has been questioned before, many times by the fans, by Jose Mourinho and previously Mauricio Pochettino.
Would Daniel Levy dip deep into Joe Lewis’ pockets and put the money down for someone like Gvardiol? Whilst every Spurs fan answers ‘no’, one of their former players even accepts it won’t happen, as he told Sky Sports News (04/01/23).
“You are looking at a centre-back,” said Kelly. “If I could take one, then it’s Gvardiol from the World Cup. It would be an amazing left-sided centre-back to bring into this side.
“Young and aggressive. But I am sure there are a lot of teams all over the world that are going to have him as their number-one signing. I don’t think it’s somebody they could get.”
PREMIER LEAGUE INTEREST IN GVARDIOL
Before the World Cup, Gvardiol was showcasing impressive performances for RB Leipzig in the Champions League, so it’s no surprise that he’s now a wanted man.
It’s been lifted by his performances in Qatar, as Croatia were knocked out of the semi-finals, with the likes of Spurs and Liverpool now expressing interest in the player.
When Conte talks about the club going to the next level, he wants players like Gvardiol added to the books, but all of that depends on those upstairs and whether they are going to push the boat out again.
Spurs have spent under Conte, make no bones about it, but as Glenn Hoddle questioned why would you want to splash the cash again for a manager that might not be here in 12 months?
