Newcastle are reportedly believed to be closing in on a deal to sign the striker.

Yoshinori Muto of Japan goes past Kamil Glik of Poland during the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia group H match between Japan and Poland at Volgograd Arena on June 28, 2018 in Volgograd, Russia.

Yoshinori Muto has responded to reporters at Haneda Airport on Thursday by stating he will have “good news soon”, after being asked whether he is joining Newcastle United.

Mainz forward Muto, who impressed at the World Cup with Japan, is reportedly closing in on a move to Newcastle and was even captured on his Instagram stating that he was at the airport, posting: “See you Japan”.

Before boarding, the 26-year-old was asked if he was leaving Mainz to join Newcastle, and teased reporters by keeping his cards close to his chest. He did disclose, though, that he would be moving on.

However, Newcastle fans will be excited as he was quoted by Kyodo News as saying that there will be good news in the coming hours, as he looks likely to be jetting into England ahead of signing a £9million deal (Daily Mail).

“I can’t say yet but I should be able to deliver good news soon,” Muto told reporters at Haneda airport. “I believe I’ll grow as a player if I put myself in a competitive environment.”

“My goal is to net 10 goals, a number I haven’t reached during a season (overseas).”

Muto has less than 12 months remaining on his contract at Mainz, perhaps allowing Newcastle to lure him to Tyneside. He impressed in the Bundesliga last term, scoring 10 goals and adding five assists in 30 outings.

Newcastle desperately need a striker and have done for some time, with Islam Slimani failing to make an impact while Joselu has stuttered since his move from Stoke City last summer.
