Paul Merson was left ‘wowed’ by Alexander Isak after he scored on his Newcastle United debut on Wednesday night in the Premier League at Anfield.

Even though Eddie Howe’s side suffered a cruel 2-1 defeat to Liverpool, Isak was one of the shining lights for his team and Merson claimed that the ‘Geordies are going to love this lad’ and he is someone who ‘looks better than good’, as he told Sky Sports News.

Well, that’s a change of tune from Merson because when the Magpies broke their transfer-record for the player he was saying something else.

Newcastle paid Spanish side Real Sociedad £63 million for the 22-year-old (Sky Sports) and after a delay over a work permit, he didn’t disappoint his new fans on debut.

Merson previously questioned the transfer and even claimed that it ‘worried’ him. But the two-time Premier League winner is worrying no more and he has changed his tune on the striker big time.

“Oh my,” said Merson. “What a goal it is by Isak. It’s a great goal – It falls to Longstaff, he plays a lovely little ball to Isak into the box.

“He’s one v one with the keeper. And he smashes it into the roof of the net. Wow! What a finish.

“What a finish (Isak’s disallowed goal). He just went too early. What a finish. I mean, it’s offside, but the Geordie fans are going to love this lad. Wow. And he didn’t know he was offside. He looks better than good.”

NEWCASTLE’S EXCELLENT BUSINESS

Ever since Newcastle were taken over by the Saudis, the club have splashed the cash and backed Howe in the market.

It’s easy having the money, it’s easy spending the money from their perspective, but it’s a different matter to actually make things work.

But their business, since the winter, has been outstanding from the capture of Matt Targett to Isak scoring on his debut.

And all of that is showing itself in the Premier League because, at the rate Newcastle are going, they have every chance to secure European football.
