Paul Merson has written in SportsKeeda that Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United could be about to make a mistake signing Alexander Isak from Real Sociedad in the summer transfer window.

The former Arsenal star has asked why it is that Newcastle are about to sign Isak, and not La Liga giants Real Madrid or Barcelona.

The Sky Sports pundit has also wondered why Newcastle’s owners, PIF, are spending over the odds on Sociedad and Sweden international striker Isak.

According to Sky Sports, Newcastle are on the verge of securing the services of the striker for £58 million from La Liga club Sociedad.

Isak has reportedly already undergone a medical at Newcastle.

Paul Merson on Newcastle United-bound Alexander Isak

Merson wrote about Isak on SportsKeeda: “Newcastle have made a big statement with Alexander Isak’s signing. He hasn’t played in the Premier League.

“I haven’t seen the big clubs going after him, and it’s a lot of money. I haven’t seen Barcelona or Real Madrid going in for him either and they would’ve seen plenty of him in La Liga. That’s a worrying sign.

“Then again, the same would’ve been said about Bruno Guimaraes. Newcastle have hopefully got it right again with Isak. I’m not saying he won’t be a gem of a player, but will he still be a gem at £58 million?”

Good signing for the Magpies?

In our opinion, Real Sociedad striker Alexander Isak would be a good signing for Newcastle United in the summer transfer window.

Isak is only 22, which means that the Swedish forward can get better in the coming years.

The youngster did well for Sweden at the Euro 2020 finals and impressed former Tottenham Hotspur striker Gary Lineker among others.

Isak has scored one goal in two La Liga matches for Sociedad so far this season.

The Swede scored six goals and gave two assists in La Liga in 2021-22, and scored 17 goals and provided two assists in the league in 2020-21.
