Tottenham Hotspur fans have been left angry after UEFA announced that their match against Rennes is ‘due to take place as scheduled’.

Is the game happening?

Tottenham made a statement last night saying that they would not be participating in their Conference League game against Rennes tonight, in light of a covid outbreak at the club.

However, Rennes hit back later in the evening, suggesting that Tottenham hadn’t acted fairly.

And UEFA’s latest update has only served to make the situation even more unclear.

“The match is due to take place as scheduled,” they announced, as covered by the Athletic.

“We have no other comment to make at this stage.”

“For further information regarding Tottenham’s COVID situation, please contact the club.”

That stance has apparently not changed overnight.

And the latest news has frustrated Spurs supporters, who feel there should be far more understanding of the situation.

Are Tottenham forfeiting?

Given UEFA’s wording it may be that Tottenham simply have to forfeit the fixture.

That would see them drop out of the Conference League, as only a win would have sealed their progress to the knockout stages.

Antonio Conte has already expressed how upset he is about the situation, with Tottenham now closing the first-team section of their training ground.

The late notice for Rennes, who have traveled to England, is hardly ideal.

However, surely there must be some understanding that Spurs could not have foresaw this situation unfolding.

With the game due to kick off in a matter of hours, it will now be interesting to see how events unfold throughout the day.

But UEFA’s current reported stance has made things a lot more uncertain.

Moving situation

Thankfully for Tottenham fans it now seems that common sense has prevailed.

UEFA have since put out a statement suggesting that the game will be called off and Spurs will not have to forfeit.

Tottenham’s only issue now is finding room in their busy schedule over whether to fit the match in, especially as there could be further postponements to come, given the covid situation at the club.
