Liverpool’s title defence may be crumbling, but one of the club’s greatest ever players is on course for a hugely significant league win.

Celtic were widely expected to secure a historic tenth successive title this season, but the champions currently sit 18 points behind Rangers with just eight games remaining.

If both Glasgow sides win their next two games, Steven Gerrard’s men will have the opportunity to be crowned champions at Celtic Park on March 21.

Naturally, his successful season has intensified speculation that he will one day return to Anfield as manager.

Ibrox legend Richard Gough is full of praise for Gerrard, but wants the 40-year-old to bide his time and become more experienced.

The Rangers job was Gerrard’s first in management. Aside from their superb league form which has seen them remain unbeaten in 30 Premiership matches this season, they also topped a Europa League group which featured Benfica, Standard Liege and Lech Poznan.

They’re firm favourites to reach the last 16 after beating Royal Antwerp 4-3 away from home in last Thursday’s first leg.

Speaking to the Liverpool Echo, former Everton defender Gough said: “I’ve been very impressed with him.

“This is his third season and he started really well.

“I can’t believe how well the team has done in Europe and don’t forget, it’s not the Rangers of 30 years ago with England internationals in the side.

“With the quality of players he’s got up there at the moment he’s done a remarkable job, he really has.

“The money the players are on up there is maybe comparable to the Championship and to be in with a chance of getting through to the last 16 in the Europa League again is terrific. And that’s without 55,000 fans behind them.

“The word on the street is that one day he will come back and manage Liverpool, but I just hope that doesn’t happen for maybe five years or so because he’s still a young man.”
