Wolves had been linked with signing the Nottingham Forest striker before Middlesbrough moved in.

Middlesbrough clinched the signing of Britt Assombalonga last night, signing the striker for a club record £15 million fee from Nottingham Forest.

Assombalonga’s move makes Middlesbrough one of the clear favourites to win promotion and ramps up anticipation of their Championship opener against Wolves on August 5.

Wolves themselves had been linked with signing Assombalonga from Forest, with SkyBet ranking them as second favourites behind Boro.

Back in 2014 Kenny Jackett told the Shropshire Star that he had wanted the striker, but even back then he was too expensive.

Wolves can afford him now as the acquisition of Ruben Neves has shown, and they are in need of a goalscorer.

Assombalonga’s injury history makes him a risky signing for Middlesbrough, and an outstanding one if he stays fit.

After the signing of Ruben Neves, Wolves received plenty of criticism from fans of other clubs for their big spending – and fans are now wondering if the same ire will be directed at Garry Monk’s Middlesbrough.
