Interim Rangers boss Graeme Murty must start defender Danny Wilson after a flawless performance against Aberdeen on Wednesday night proved crucial in helping the Gers achieve three points.

Wilson, 25, started at centre-back alongside Bruno Alves, despite Fabio Cardoso posting a Tweet prior to the match that implied he had returned to full fitness from a broken nose suffered against Motherwell last month,

Former Liverpool and Hearts defender Wilson was impeccable, winning every header and keeping possession well to nullify the likes of Stevie May, Kenny McLean and Ryan Christie.

Even though Cardoso could be available once again, temporary manager Murty must ignore the 23-year-old’s calls for a return to the first team and look to create a partnership between Alves and Wilson – starting on Sunday.

The Gers go up against Aberdeen for the second time in five days, as they look to keep the pressure on Derek McInnes’ side with three points. A win would see the Gers climb above the Dons into second place.

Rangers’ number six is performing as though he is playing for his future, with his current Ibrox contract set to expire in just over six months’ time. It sees him become available under the bosman ruling from January 1.

The Ibrox club will be desperate not to lose their best players after a disappointing last transfer window that has seen Barrie McKay, Joe Garner and Martyn Waghorn thrive since leaving the club and moving to English Championship sides.

But most of all, the Gers will not want to see one of their best defenders leave on a free transfer. They must give Wilson the chance to prove he is over his injury demons and can start to become a consistent, dependable member of the side.

Handing him a run of games alongside Alves will give him the chance to do that, and should eventually see the Gers hand him a new contract to extend his stay in Glasgow.
