Fabrizio Romano has tipped Liverpool to make a move for Sporting Lisbon midfielder and Chelsea and Manchester City target Matheus Nunes, with the Reds also interested in signing the Portuguese international.
Speaking to Caught Offside, the Italian journalist claimed that Jurgen Klopp’s side could make an attempt to sign a new midfielder this summer, with Nunes a potential candidate as a signing for the Merseyside giants, with Nunes highly-rated amongst many top sides in Europe.
One of Sporting’s best players last season, Nunes has been linked with a reported €50m (£42m) move to the Premier League, with City and Chelsea just two sides interested in the 23-year-old midfielder, with Leeds United also reportedly enquiring for the Brazilian-born talent this summer.
With Liverpool suffering a shock draw to newly-promoted Fulham this weekend in their Premier League opener and Thiago Alcantara facing another spell out on the sideline through injury, a new central midfielder could be a worthy investment this summer for the Reds, even after spending a club-record fee for Darwin Nunez.
Indeed, James Milner and Jordan Henderson’s ages also mean signing a new central midfielder could be a smart move from the Reds this summer, and for Romano, Nunes could be the player Liverpool look at should they decide to approach anybody this month over a potential transfer.
Romano said: “Klopp and Liverpool will consider a new midfielder if there is an opportunity on the market. I believe that Sporting Lisbon’s Matheus Nunes is a very interesting player who could be a good fit for this team, but we need to see the amount that the club will be prepared to invest.”
Nunes could be an incredible signing for Liverpool this summer

With central midfield options either injury-prone or entering the final years of their peak, Liverpool could do with signing a younger player for the position this summer, and Nunes could be perfect for what Klopp wants in someone who can operate in the area.
Versatile, athletic and a full international, Nunes if perfect for what the Anfield side need in a long-term midfield option, and for Liverpool, they should be looking to sign the 23-year-old before the likes of Chelsea and City launch their own moves to bring the Portuguese star to the Premier League.
