Chelsea are reportedly in advanced talks to sign Sporting Lisbon star Matheus Nunes, a player Newcastle United are also reportedly in negotiations to bring to the Premier League.

According to A Bola, the west London side are pressing hard to sign the 23-year-old Portuguese international, with a €50m (£43m) deal close to be agreed on between the two clubs as Nunes looks likely to become Chelsea’s first signing of the summer and of the Todd Boehly era.

As mentioned, though, Chelsea aren’t alone in their pursuit of Nunes, with Newcastle also reportedly in talks to sign the midfielder as reported by Foot Mercato, with Everton and Manchester City also interested in signing the Sporting superstar this summer.

A left-sided player who has been used by Sporting as an all-action midfielder, Nunes was excellent for the Portuguese giants last season as they progressed to the Round of 16 of the UEFA Champions League, with the 23-year-old starting against Manchester City.

Hailed as a midfielder with an incredible range of passing, the Brazilian-born ace bagged four goals and five assists in 50 appearances last season, with Chelsea seemingly targeting Nunes as a long-term replacement for Jorginho, who could reportedly be set to leave the Blues this summer.

Indeed, news of Chelsea’s efforts to sign Nunes will be a blow for Newcastle, who looked like the favourites to land the Portuguese international, though following this update, Thomas Tuchel now seems set to sign the 23-year-old as their first arrival of the transfer window.

Nunes could be a shrewd signing for Chelsea for many years to come

This summer will mark the first for Chelsea where heavy spending isn’t a guarantee and paying huge transfer fees for players who don’t fit the system will not longer be accepted, which is why the potential signing of Nunes could be a shrewd piece of business from the west Londoners.

The midfielder is an exciting prospect who has plenty of experience playing at the top level, and for Chelsea, a player like Nunes is exactly what Tuchel needs to inject some creativity and a much-needed spark to the squad that for most of last season were missing that special something.
