It’s a long journey home from the World Cup for most fans, staff, players and their families.
After almost six weeks, the tournament is over with Spain crowned world champions after their 1-0 win over Argentina in New Jersey on Sunday.
There has been a mass migration out of the US in recent days, leading to delays at airports across the country. Travel plans have been scuppered, money has been lost, and the airports themselves have been manic.
Megan Pickford, wife of England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, has documented her experience of being stranded in JFK Airport in New York with their three young kids.
Megan Pickford’s nightmare 24 hours returning from World Cup
Pickford didn’t play during England’s third place play-off win against France, but he had to remain with the squad to fill out the bench on Saturday.
That meant his wife Megan and their kids were traveling alone back to the UK. And everything that could have gone wrong, did.
Megan shared the video to her 50,000+ followers on TikTok.
The video, titled ‘ Spend 24 hours with me in airport hell’, showed them boarded on their original flight. But after a six-hour wait on the runway in a queue of 30 planes, they were returned to the airport.
She then had to reclaim all their baggage from a sea of at least 100 suitcases before finding a spot in departures to grab some shut-eye. It was 4am by this point.
Then there was another huge queue to book another flight. That involved another six-hour wait.
When Megan and the three kids finally got on the next flight, they looked to be in the clear. That is, until a ‘missing part’ saw their second flight delayed another two hours.
Megan’s caption for the post summed the situation up perfectly:
“Just waiting for Ant and Dec to jump out and tell me it’s all a wind up?”
She noted the flight could be cancelled as well, but no posts since suggests the plane got off the ground.
The Pickfords bought a £5.7 million manor house in Cheshire earlier this year, which is where they will be heading back to after a trying trip back from the States.
The Everton goalkeeper will enjoy some well-deserved time off after an impressive World Cup campaign with England before returning to the Toffees, whose pre-season got underway on Saturday with a 4-0 win against Dundee.
