Wyndham Clark has claimed his second major championship win after emerging victorious at the US Open.

Clark triumphed at Shinnecock Hills with a score of four-under, one shot ahead of his fellow American Sam Burns.

He lifted the prestigious trophy in 2023 as well, when he also won by one shot over Rory McIlroy at Los Angeles Country Club.

But this US Open victory at Shinnecock Hills was undoubtedly even more impressive than most people realize, not for one reason but for several.

How did you feel about the New York crowd's treatment of Wyndham Clark?

Wyndham Clark’s US Open win was even more impressive than most realize

Most significantly, Clark received abuse from many US Open fans in Long Island, who were very publicly rooting against the 32-year-old.

But despite that adversity, which was at times a surprise given he is American, he was able to produce a superb mental showing in New York, along with his golf.

Clark also had to overcome Shinnecock itself, ending the arduous week as one of only three players to have finished under par in the very challenging conditions.

Moreover, he held the outright lead for more than 71-and-a-half successive hours throughout the week, constantly placing him under huge pressure as the player to catch.

Incidentally, that means he is the first wire-to-wire champion of the US Open since Martin Kaymer in 2014.

And finally, Clark had the very unenviable task of playing alongside Scottie Scheffler in his final round of the tournament.

Not only is he the current world number one, but he was also looking to complete the career Grand Slam at Shinnecock.

Partnering Scheffler in such circumstances cannot have been easy, but Clark deserves huge credit for holding his nerve and ultimately coming out on top.

Michael Kim congratulates Wyndham Clark after US Open fan abuse

Clark won’t exactly go down as the most popular US Open champion ever, but that will not matter too much to him right now.

He was able to celebrate with his family after holing his winning putt, with his father surprising the emotional champion by making an appearance at Shinnecock.

And Clark’s approach has already drawn praise from a fellow player, with Michael Kim writing on X: “That was such a gutsy performance by Wyndham.

“The entire crowd was against him and he pulled it off.

“What a win.”

In a week that tested the biggest talents in world golf, Clark ultimately deserved the win in Long Island, where he carded rounds of 64, 69, 70 and 73.

Across his 72 holes at the major championship, the winner recorded two eagles, 12 birdies, 46 pars and 12 bogeys.
