Wyndham Clark is doing his best to hold on at the US Open, but his six-shot lead heading into the final round has been significantly cut.
However, not only is the former champion battling a handful of fellow players, but he is also battling many fans at Shinnecock Hills.
Despite being American, the 2023 winner has been the victim of a volatile crowd in Long Island, many of whom clearly do not want to see him lift the trophy.
US Open fans are actively cheering against Clark, with shouts of “Anyone but Wyndham” and “Get in the bunker” common throughout his final round.
Such abuse has now drawn sympathy from many fans watching on from elsewhere as Clark seeks to win the US Open for a second time.
What needs to happen for Wyndham Clark to lose the golf tournament?
The American has more than one hand on his second major title…
Golf fans feel sorry for Wyndham Clark after US Open abuse
Sharing a reaction to the unsavory scenes at Shinnecock Hills, one disgusted fan wrote on X: “I hate it. Absolutely terrible boorish behavior from this crowd.”
A second agreed, saying: “I’m not sure we’ll see an American player at the US Open get treated the way Wyndham Clark is being treated right now ever again. This is actually uncomfortable.”
And another concurred, noting: “Nah I’m sorry I’ve not seen a set of fans celebrate every time a player misses the fairway or a green outside the Ryder Cup. Kinda feel bad for the bloke now.”
Further sympathy for Clark arrived from others, who said: “I don’t want him to win but this is over the top. Golf fans should be respectful,” and “I hate it! Clark has had his issues, but working hard to correct it! Boos have no place in golf!”
And another stated: “What do we think of fans cheering for Wyndham’s demise? Whenever he does something bad the fans are elated. Truly in enemy territory. Feel bad, but he’s earned a lot of it. Damaging a locker room, throwing club near a volunteer… and not showing sorrow.”

Spectators removed from Shinnecock Hills after Wyndham Clark abuse
The aforementioned incidents are likely very much behind the abuse, with the PGA Tour player not exactly endearing himself to golf fans over the years.
He has been guilty of endangering others by throwing his clubs, while Clark damaged the Oakmont lockers at the US Open in 2025, for which he was banned from the iconic venue.
Clark admitted he can be volatile, but his previous actions don’t exactly justify the behavior of some at Shinnecock Hills.
And that is certainly the view that organizers have taken, with some spectators having been removed from the venue on Sunday for crossing the line.
Of course, it is not the first time that New York has played host to such scenes, with European Ryder Cup players receiving plenty of abuse when the prestigious event was held at Bethpage Black last year.
Clark is trying to win people back, and it’s fair to say that he should achieve that goal if he overcomes such adversity at Shinnecock to win the US Open.
