Marc Marquez’s numbers are the talk of the paddock, and it’s not just fans who are taking notice. MotoGP commentator Matt Birt has pointed out that even riders at the top of their game have had to admit they can’t match what Marquez is doing physically.

There is little doubt that Marc Marquez occupies a unique place in today’s MotoGP landscape, and 2025 only strengthened that belief.

After spending years fighting back from injuries, he returned to take his seventh premier class crown, beating out a field filled with champions who rose during his time away.

Fabio Quartararo insists Marquez’s absence doesn’t take away from his 2021 title. Still, it’s hard not to think about how different things might have been if the Ant of Cervera hadn’t missed so much time through injury.

Speaking on the Motorsport Republica podcast, MotoGP commentator Matt Birt was asked for his thoughts on whether the reigning world champion can be considered a “generational talent” in the sport.

Birt pointed out that this is something widely recognised by those who share the track with Marquez, saying: “What makes Marc stand out from everybody else is when you talk to the other riders, nobody knows better than those guys the talent that he’s got.”

“You’ve only got to listen to some of the media scrums, the debriefs, guys that have ridden Hondas, guys that are now riding Ducatis, guys that are directly compared to Marc on the same bikes.

“They can see his data and these are guys who are top-level world championship MotoGP riders who have won MotoGP races.

Birt continued: “And for me what makes Marc stand out is when they go ‘I look at his data I see what he’s doing on circuit and I can’t do that. I cannot do that. I can’t do what that guy is doing.

“I’ve tried and I’m on my arse or I’ve tried and I run wide. Or I’ve tried and I lose it. Or try it so much slower.’

Marc Marquez’s journey back to the top has shifted opinions, even among those who once doubted him

Once a divisive figure in MotoGP circles, often because of his infamous clash with Valentino Rossi, Marquez has won over many former critics. His return from injury and rise back to the top have reshaped how fans view him.

Birt expanded on this point during the podcast, saying: “A lot of people are becoming Marc converts because they’ve realised what this guy has been through, and the sacrifices that he’s made; it’s not about the money.

“Marc’s got more money than he’ll ever know what to do with for the rest of his life. It’s just about proving to nobody else other than himself what he’s capable of.

“Am I still good enough? Can I still do it if my body is in relatively full working order? Am I still the guy to beat in MotoGP?

“And as we have seen over the last couple of years, yes, he is. And for my MotoGP fans, long may that continue because it’s an incredible feel-good story.”
