Nico Harrison’s blunt warning to Luka Doncic once sounded more like frustration than intent, but one NBA insider has explained why the comment was initially dismissed as little more than posturing.
The former Dallas Mavericks executive had privately expressed anger over Doncic’s conditioning, issuing a remark that later took on far greater significance.
At the time, however, those words were not treated as a serious threat.

Tim MacMahon recalls Nico Harrison’s explosive warning to Luka Doncic
Speaking on a recent episode of the Howdy Partners, MacMahon described a tense exchange involving Harrison and explained why it failed to land as intended.
“So, if you want to complain about his conditioning, put your name on it. So, ‘What are you gonna do about it?’ And I swear to you, Mike, Nico said, ‘If I got to trade him, I’ll trade his a__.’
“And like I threw my head back and rolled my eyes because I was like, ‘Sure you will, buddy. Sure, you will,'” MacMahon revealed.
The reaction reflected a common assumption around the league that superstars of Doncic’s caliber are effectively untouchable.
In that context, Harrison’s comment felt like an emotional release rather than a realistic plan.
Nico Harrison proved Tim MacMahon’s ‘1000%’ belief wrong
Even when Doncic was actually traded to the Los Angeles Lakers, MacMahon, much like the rest of the NBA community, still couldn’t believe the announcement.
“And then when Shams’ tweet came through, my initial reaction was, I can’t believe he did. So, you could say I had a six-week heads-up on it.
“I 1000% did not take that seriously because how many times you talk to people and they’re like blowing off steam and venting and talking big,” MacMahon admitted.
Executives regularly vent in private, but those moments rarely translate into franchise-altering decisions. That assumption appears to be what shaped MacMahon’s disbelief, even after hearing Harrison’s warning directly.
Ultimately, Harrison’s frustrating decision made him the villain for one of the most passionate fanbases in the league. Moreover, Harrison lost his job as the Mavericks GM, while Doncic continues to impress in LA.
