DR Congo pulled off one of the early shocks of the 2026 World Cup without the country’s most recognizable supporter frozen in the stands.
Michel Kuka Mboladinga, better known as Lumumba Vea, was expected to be part of the story.
Instead, his absence became part of it.
DR Congo statue superfan missed Portugal opener in Houston
The report says Mboladinga did not attend DR Congo’s World Cup opener against Portugal at Houston Stadium, the FIFA name for NRG Stadium, because his travel clearance was still complicated by U.S. entry restrictions tied to an Ebola outbreak.
That is why the Leopards were without their living-statue fan for the 1-1 draw. Mboladinga went viral during this year’s Africa Cup of Nations by standing motionless for entire matches, posing as a tribute to Patrice Lumumba, the country’s first prime minister and independence icon.
He believes the ritual gives the team emotional stamina, and the players clearly value it too. According to the report, members of the national team pleaded with President Félix Tshisekedi to get him included in the official World Cup delegation.
The president’s intervention mattered. Mboladinga, 49, is now expected to join the delegation later in the tournament, with the report saying he expects to be at DR Congo’s June 27 match in Atlanta against Uzbekistan.
It is another chapter in an unlikely rise. Mboladinga also works as an animator for AS Vita, has become a national symbol through his Lumumba tribute, and has turned viral fame into adoration and endorsement attention.
DR Congo make historic World Cup start against Portugal

His absence did not stop Congo from producing a result worthy of his statue pose. Portugal entered the Group K opener as the heavyweight name, with Cristiano Ronaldo starting another World Cup campaign, and the crowd in Houston was heavily focused on the Portuguese star.
But Congo stayed in the match. Portugal went ahead through Joao Neves, only for Yoane Wissa to answer before halftime with a header that gave DR Congo a 1-1 draw and one of the most emotional results of the opening week.
The result carried extra weight because this is DR Congo’s first World Cup appearance in 52 years. For a team returning to the biggest stage after more than half a century, taking a point from Portugal immediately changed the mood around Group K.
It also made Mboladinga’s expected Atlanta arrival more powerful. Congo already has proof it can compete without him in the stadium. If he is finally there against Uzbekistan, the symbolism will be impossible to miss.
