Charles Barkley admitted he was “mad” at Rory McIlroy during the Masters, even before the Northern Irishman went on to secure back-to-back titles at Augusta.
The comments came during the tournament itself, before the final outcome was decided.
That timing makes Barkley’s reaction more telling, capturing his frustration and anticipation as the event was still unfolding.

Charles Barkley explains his frustration with Rory McIlroy during The Masters
Speaking in an interview recorded during the tournament via TNT Sports, Barkley described his reaction to McIlroy’s early dominance.
“Friday night, when I went to bed, I was so mad at Rory McIlroy. I was like, ‘Damn, he’s going to ruin my whole weekend.’ Even if he had a big lead, I was going to watch anyway.
“But I was so mad, I was fuming. I’m like, ‘He’s got a six-shot lead? You know what it’d be great to have him [win] back-to-back,'” Barkley said.
The frustration came from the possibility of a one-sided finish, with McIlroy building a commanding lead heading into the weekend.
At that stage, the concern was that the tournament could lose its competitive edge too early.
Rory McIlroy’s Masters lead quickly created tension
That narrative began to shift almost immediately once play resumed, with early mistakes opening the door for a tighter contest.
“When he bogeyed hole one, I said, ‘Woo, this could get interesting.’ It’s going to be a shootout,” Chuck added.
The moment signalled a change in momentum, turning what looked like a comfortable lead into a more competitive battle.
It also aligned with what unfolded over the weekend, as McIlroy had to manage pressure rather than cruise to victory.
In hindsight, Barkley’s reaction captured both sides of the tournament – early dominance followed by renewed drama, before McIlroy ultimately completed the job.
