Charles Barkley drew attention during a live broadcast after telling ESPN to “pay your bills” as technical issues disrupted an on-air segment.

Charles Barkley made the comment while appearing with the Inside the NBA crew during an appearance by NBA insider Shams Charania.

The moment quickly circulated, given Barkley’s strained relationship with ESPN, despite the humorous intent from the former NBA MVP.

Charles Barkley jokes during Shams Charania technical issues

Shams Charania joined the Inside the NBA broadcast remotely before his connection dropped mid-segment. The panel filled time as the technical issue was addressed.

“ESPN, pay your bills, man. I know times are tough.”

It was clearly a comment made in jest from Barkley, whose signature deadpan delivery has become the stuff of broadcast legend within NBA circles.

The comment was delivered humorously but drew attention, given Barkley and the rest of Inside the NBA crew’s history with the network.

Why Barkley and Inside the NBA crew remain frustrated with ESPN

Charles Barkley has previously spoken about frustrations shared by the Inside the NBA crew regarding ESPN. Those issues relate to contractual uncertainty and scheduling concerns.

“I love watching basketball, but I’m not going to do all these damn shows,” Barkley said. “I wish we had been on more. We’ve complained because we’ve only been on ESPN four times in three months.”

“When I was talking about working all the time, I’m not going to do all these damn shows. I’m not going to be on ESPN 1, 2, 3, Deportes, Nacho, Echo, whatever they call it. I’m not going to be doing all that.”

Barkley has said the situation has created tension despite the show’s popularity. That backdrop added weight to Barkley’s comment during the technical disruption.
