According to reports this week (Sun and Sunday People) Aston Villa boss Steve Bruce is looking to add a new left-back in January.

With Jordan Amavi back fit and Aly Cissokho also on the club’s books, Villa would appear to be reasonably strong in that department.

However, if they are in the market for reinforcements in that department, they may as well do it right – and signing a player like Norwich City’s Martin Olsson could have multiple benefits.

The Swede is out of contract at the end of this season, leaving Norwich running the risk of losing him for nothing if they fail to move him on in January.

As well as weakening what is likely to be a promotion rival come the second half of the campaign, Villa would be adding a player with significant Premier League and international experience, who could also operate in a more advanced role, if required.

Olsson’s arrival would also save Bruce a job in the summer, should he lead the Villans back to the Premier League, whereas a lesser player may be moved on.

According to the Sunday People, Villa owner Tony Xia is ready to back the former Hull City boss this winter and capturing Olsson would be a sign of intent.
