Arsenal fans should be very worried after an announcement was made regarding the clash against Liverpool.

The Gunners head to Anfield this Sunday where they will look to defeat the Reds on Merseyside – in Premier League action at least – for the first time since September 2012.

However, that dreadful record and the mental barrier it may cause is not the only obstacle for Mikel Arteta to overcome.

What’s the story?

Well, Arsenal fans will be disappointed to know that Paul Tierney has been chosen to referee the clash at Anfield.

Of course, every fan likes to have a little moan regardless of which official is selected to oversee their side’s games.

However, Arsenal supporters have a genuine reason to be concerned about Tierney.

It was the 42-year-old who disallowed Gabriel Martinelli’s opener against Manchester United at Old Trafford back in October, before the Red Devils eventually recorded a 3-1 win.

Later, sources told ESPN that an independent panel found that decision – along with five others – to actually be incorrect.

Tierney was also in charge when Arsenal suffered the crushing 3-0 defeat to Tottenham which eventually saw them miss out on a place in the Champions League, sending Rob Holding off while also handing Spurs a soft penalty.

Interestingly, the Gunners have lost all five of their last games under Tierney’s watchful eye.

Arsenal face litmus test against Liverpool

Arsenal have hurdled many obstacles this season which the old Arsenal may have ran straight into and fell apart.

However, a trip to Anfield is the ultimate litmus test for Arteta’s current crop of table toppers.

The Gunners have come from behind to salvage wins against Aston Villa, Manchester United, Bournemouth and West Ham this season, but doing the business against Liverpool at Anfield would surely be the most telling sign yet that this Arsenal side mean business.

Arsenal always seem to shrink at Anfield, with the intensity of the Liverpool fans appearing to throw the north Londoners off their stride – the fact it has been over a decade since they last won there in the Premier League speaks volumes.

Therefore, if Arteta ends that dreadful record this Sunday, there will be little left for this Arsenal side to prove.
