Denzel Dumfries has a choice to make in January. The Inter Milan star could have three of the Premier League’s biggest clubs chasing after him – but Dumfries has got to pick Tottenham over Manchester United and Chelsea.

Dumfries, 26, is considered one of the best right wing-backs in European football. But Inter are in need of cash and will have to sell one of their best players to bring in some much-needed money. Dumfries might be that player.

The latest report from Rudy Galetti claims Manchester United have asked for information regarding Dumfries. Prevoius reports from CMW claim Chelsea are interested in a straight swap with midfielder Mateo Kovacic.

CMW have also said that Tottenham could plan a player-plus-cash deal for the £35million-rated Netherlands international. So, Dumfries has three of the biggest English sides after him – but Tottenham is his best move.

Well, all three clubs would benefit from Dumfries. But given the type of player he is, he would not shine in the formation Erik ten Hag plays. The Dutch gaffer plays four in defence. Dumfries would have to be more defensive.

That is not playing to his strengths. Of course, he would like to play under a fellow countryman. But joining United would not allow him to show his best form – unless ten Hag converts to a back three. Chelsea play three in defence.

But when Reece James is fit, you would argue the England international is better than Dumfries. A fan favourite, you would back James to start over Dumfries. So, he would struggle to shine at United, and second-choice at Chelsea.

It is different at Tottenham. They play three at the back and given Antonio Conte only left Inter in 2021, the Serie A side play much like Conte’s Spurs. Again, three at the back. But also, Tottenham’s right wing-backs are poor.

Emerson Royal has not been good enough ever since joining Spurs from Barcelona in 2021. Matt Doherty is a good squad player, good for the dressing room, but not enough to start. So, Spurs is £55k-a-week Dumfries’ best move.
