Italian outlet CMW claim that Chelsea could end up signing Inter Milan star Denzel Dumfries in a straight-swap deal for Mateo Kovacic – amid reports that Tottenham are also targeting the Netherlands defender ahead of January.
Dumfries, 26, is a man in demand after shining for Inter in Serie A, since his move from PSV Eindhoven. Joining Inter in 2021, he has gone to play 63 times in all competitions for the struggling Nerrazzuri – having a hand in 16 goals.
But Sunday’s 2-0 loss to Juventus has seen Inter slip into seventh place, outside of the European qualification places. Simone Inzaghi’s job is under pressure, with Inter also needing to sell some of their stars in order to balance the books.
It could see Dumfries depart. CMW say that Tottenham want to sign Dumfries from Antonio Conte’s old side, and might even include Emerson Royal in the deal. Now, the latest report says Chelsea also want the £35million-rated ace.
Indeed, the report claims that Inter want Kovacic. The Croatia international is about to enter the last 18 months of his contract and that is tempting Inzaghi’s Inter. They could be willing to offer Dumfries in a straight swap for Kovacic.

What a signing Dumfries would be, for any Premier League club. But who needs him more – Tottenham or Chelsea? The Blues have Reece James, and Cesar Azpilicueta as cover. While James is injured, they are well-stocked in that area.
Tottenham are well-stocked – but in terms of quality players, they are lacking. Djed Spence is a rookie, Matt Doherty is in and out of the side following an injury and Royal is often-criticised by fans. It is an area in need of improvement.
Tottenham desperately need him more and the chance to work under a manager like Conte may sway Dumfries. The 3-4-3 system that Conte is renowned for would suit him perfectly. There is little between the two sides at the moment.
