Both Rangers and Celtic look set to be a striker short in January.

Steven Gerrard’s Rangers and Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic are both being linked with moves for Fran Sol.

The Sunday People reports that Rangers and Celtic are in a battle to land the prolific Willem II striker.

But who exactly is Sol? HITC Sport has the lowdown…

5) Sol received one of the finest educations one can get as a footballer, spending his formative years (12 of them) at Real Madrid, before switching to Villarreal in 2014. But despite a prolific spell at B-team level, the 26-year-old only played twice for the Yellow Submarines’ senior side.

4) After two years at Estadio de la Cerámica, Sol made a free transfer move to Willem II, where his career finally took off. His first season in Tilburg yielded 10 league goals, followed by 16 last term and 12 already (from 16 games), this. Only PSV Eindhoven’s Luuk de Jong (14) has more.

3) The penalty area is where Sol does most of his work, with finishing a particular strong point. His anticipation and leap (especially – considering he is only 5ft 11in tall) are two other stand-out attributes. A good alternative to Alfredo Morelos (Rangers) and Leigh Griffiths (Celtic) perhaps?

Leigh Griffiths of Celtic is seen at full time during the Scottish Premier League between Celtic and Rangers at Celtic Park Stadium on September 2, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

2) Sol’s contract technically expires next summer, although it is understood to contain a one-year option in Willem’s favour, which would be in their best interests to trigger. But cashing in may not be out of the question either way, with his value only going to decrease over the next six/18 months.

1) As well as Rangers and Celtic, Derby County and Swansea City are also keen on Sol, according to the Sunday People, while Teamtalk reports that Burnley, Cardiff City, Huddersfield Town, Leeds United and Middlesbrough have all ‘checked on’ the player.

Would Sol be a good addition for Rangers / Celtic?
