Mitchell Starc has sparked fresh speculation about his future in international cricket after admitting he does not see himself playing into his forties, offering the clearest sign yet that his career is entering its final chapter.
The left-arm fast bowler has been central to Australia’s success for more than a decade, spearheading attacks across formats and delivering some of the nation’s most memorable spells.
Now 35, Starc is realistic about the physical toll of fast bowling and hinted that his time in the Baggy Green may have a natural limit.
Even as discussions around his long-term plans grow louder, Starc remains committed to contributing while he can. His recent comments shed light on how he views the final phase of his career and what might come next.

Mitchell Starc rules out bowling into his forties
Speaking to Cricket Australia, Starc said: “I won’t be bowling when I’m 40, no. Part of my role is my airspeed, and I’ve been able to hold on to that for five tests this summer. So, whilst I’m still doing that and playing that role for the group, I love pulling on the Baggy Green and going out with some of my close mates.
“That’s going to change at some point, and my body will let me know before anything else, I’d say, but I won’t be bowling at 40.”
The pace spearhead’s remarks suggest that retirement is not immediately on the cards but that he is aware of his physical limits.
Known for his speed and consistency, Starc has managed his workload carefully in recent years, balancing Tests, limited-overs cricket, and occasional Big Bash League appearances.
His acknowledgment that his “body will let [him] know” when it is time to stop highlights his pragmatic approach to the twilight of his playing career. Starc’s awareness of longevity has been key to maintaining his elite standards despite heavy international workloads.
Mitchell Starc reaffirms loyalty to Australian cricket
Despite questions about his future, Starc made it clear that his focus remains with the national team. He said: “Cricket for Australia is still my priority. Test matches are still my priority. If you look down the road, post-IPL if you like … there’s no shortage of cricket for Australia, and that’s certainly my priority.
“I haven’t played a lot of franchise cricket throughout my career, so I don’t think that’s going to change much.”
Starc’s statement reaffirms his commitment to representing Australia ahead of franchise opportunities. His selective approach has kept him fresh for key international tournaments and home summers, where he continues to play a vital leadership role within the bowling group.
While his career may be approaching its final stretch, his desire to perform at the highest level remains as fierce as ever, a reflection of the same determination that has defined his journey since debuting more than a decade ago.
