Steve Smith and Mitchell Starc have rallied behind Australia’s chairman of selectors, George Bailey, after former fast bowler Stuart Clark’s brutal criticism of the leadership structure in Australian cricket.
Clark’s fiery comments have reignited debate about the direction of the national team following their latest Ashes triumph.
The former Australian cricketer unleashed a scathing assessment of those running the sport, taking aim at Cricket Australia’s management and questioning whether the current hierarchy truly commands authority in the dressing room.

Stuart Clark questions Australian cricket leadership
Clark’s remarks have sparked strong reactions, particularly from within the current squad, who have firmly backed their leadership team.
“James Allsopp, who runs cricket in Australia, the head of cricket, community cricket, is a grade club cricket coach that throws underarm balls to kids.
“[Ben Oliver] runs high-performance cricket, but I’m not really sure what he does now,” Clark said, via The Daily Mail.
“Then you have George [Bailey], who is the chairman of selectors. Does he have the gravitas or the leadership skills to tell Andrew McDonald and Steve Smith or Pat Cummins what to do? He should do, 100 per cent, but I don’t think he does,” he added.
Clark’s comments were seen as a direct challenge to the authority of Australia’s cricketing structure, particularly Bailey’s influence as head selector.
Steve Smith and Mitchell Starc defend George Bailey after Clark’s criticism
Smith and Starc wasted no time in defending Bailey, crediting him for fostering a transparent and successful culture within the squad.
“He’s done a wonderful job for a long time. Since he’s been in charge, we’ve made a couple of Test Championship finals. We’ve played really good cricket,” Smith said. “We’ve won this series 4-1. So what more is there to say?”
Starc echoed that sentiment, highlighting Bailey’s honesty and clarity in communication. “The greatest thing with George is it’s never a sugar-coating conversation,” Starc stated. “He’ll tell you straight up whether it’s conditions-based, role-based or the like. That’s how I can speak on that relationship with George as a selector.”
“As Steve said, I think every move that George and the selection panel have made this series, it’s a 4-1 result,” he continued. “And they have made some tough decisions, not just this series, but even going back a series before. So to sit here 4-1, I think they’ve done a fantastic job.”
With the Ashes series ending in a commanding 4-1 win for Australia, Smith and Starc’s support of Bailey reinforces the trust and unity within the current setup.
While Clark’s criticism has stirred discussion, the Australian camp appears unfazed, confident that their leadership team continues to guide them to success both on and off the field.
