Mauricio Pochettino is likely to wait until after the FIFA World Cup 2026 before making any decision on his future.

The Argentine has so far overseen a positive start to the USMNT’s World Cup campaign, topping Group D after wins over Paraguay and Australia.

The US go through as group winners and are joined by Australia despite losing right at the end. How far is Mauricio Pochettino's side capable of going?

While the US did lose its last group game to Turkey, they are through to the round of 32 where they will play Bosnia and Herzegovina in San Francisco on Thursday.

Pochettino is only under contract until after this year’s World Cup and has been linked with a move to Italian giants AC Milan, although he could yet stay on in the US.

Pochettino to decide on future after the World Cup

According to The Athletic, the former Chelsea and Tottenham coach has been in talks with the United States Soccer Federation for several months.

Pochettino has been presented with a proposal to coach the USMNT at the 2030 World Cup, which will be held in Spain, Portugal and Morocco, with some games taking place in Paraguay, Uruguay and Argentina to celebrate its 100th anniversary.

The World Cup has so far been better than many in the US would have expected and it could yet get even better if they win their first knockout game.

However, the report adds that a decision will not be made until after this World Cup comes to an end.

If he does stay on, Pochettino would have the chance to coach the USMNT at the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles. The Athletic also suggest that the 2028 Copa America is also expected to be played on US soil.

It will be interesting to see what Pochettino decides. Not since his five-year tenure as Spurs manager has he overseen one team for a significant period of time, following relatively short spells at Chelsea and French giants Paris Saint-Germain before taking the US job.
