Jens Lehmann wants Arsenal to sign a striker similar to Olivier Giroud when the summer transfer re-opens.

The Highbury legend added that when Giroud was at Arsenal, he was someone that was a threat to opponents that were ‘sitting deep’ because of his aerial ability.

In 2018, Arsenal made the call to part ways with Giroud, with the Frenchman signing for Chelsea for £18 million (Sky Sports).

It didn’t help matters when he would go on to win the Europa League at the expense of his former side.

Nonetheless, ahead of the summer transfer window, Lehmann made it clear who Mikel Arteta needs to bring in, as he told Stadium Astro.

“I would go for a striker as well,” said Lehmann. “A tall one because when Olivier Giroud was here, he wasn’t regularly playing.

“But sometimes, against tough opponents, when they are sitting deep, you need to have a big, strong and tall striker, who was really good with his head.

“That always suits a team like Arsenal because the opposition are, most of the time, dropping deep.”

Gabriel Jesus’ name has been thrown about as someone who could swap Manchester City’s colours for that of Arsenal’s, according to The Athletic.

The Brazil international is a very different player to Giroud and someone who would suit the Gunners down to a tee.

Everyone needs that goalscorer, but Artea needs someone who is light on their feet, able to run in-behind, pick those pockets and also link-up play around them as well.

Whatever Arteta decides in the summer, one thing is for sure, his life will be a lot easier if Arsenal secure Champions League football.
