Thomas Tuchel reacts to Ben White boos after Uruguay penalty incident

England head coach Thomas Tuchel spoke after the match when asked about the crowd’s reaction.

“I heard that he was booed. I didn’t hear it actually because I was involved in the changes and instructions. It cannot be the majority,” Tuchel said.

He added: “There were some boos and some mixed reception for him, which I’m disappointed about because of course, we protect our players.”

White’s reception was shaped by both his recent return to the England setup after a long absence and his role in the match.

The defender scored after coming on, but later conceded a stoppage-time penalty that allowed Uruguay to equalise, turning the mood in the stadium.

Thomas Tuchel backs Ben White despite fan reaction at Wembley

Despite the reaction, Tuchel made it clear that White retains full support from within the squad.

“He was excellent in camp and he deserved to come on. He deserved also to start. Got us almost a winner,” Tuchel continued.

He concluded, stating: “But I also understood that it happened to other players before here. So he needs to take it on the chin. We will always protect him.”

The comments underline a balance between backing the player and acknowledging the reality of playing in front of demanding home fans. It also reinforces that White’s standing within the team remains unchanged.

The incident ultimately reflects the pressure that comes with decisive moments on the international stage.
