Southampton are yet to appoint a replacement for Nathan Jones – with Ruben Selles now appearing likely to be handed the reins.

The 39-year-old arrived at Southampton as No.2 to Ralph Hasenhuttl, and oversaw the Carabao Cup win against Sheffield Wednesday as interim after the Austrian was sacked in November.

Jesse Marsch seemed set to take over at St Mary’s before talks collapsed, and now, Sky Sports have shared how the players and boardroom have taken to Selles as he steps up.

What’s the story?

Well, it is said that Southampton players have “responded well” to training under Selles, and are enjoying the sessions.

Sky Sports add that Southampton board members have also been at Staplewood to see how the Spaniard is getting on with the first-team.

It is said that those in the boardroom at St Mary’s have been left impressed by Selles, with his “dedication and detail” particularly standing out at Staplewood, and would be happy to leave him in charge.

The Valencia-born tactician holds a UEFA Pro License and has previously worked as an Assistant Manager in Russia, Azerbaijan, Greece and Denmark.

Selles also has some managerial experience, as he was Manager of the Valencia Under-18 side.

By the sounds of it, the Southampton players wouldn’t mind if he was given the task of replacing Jones.

Ruben Selles safest option for Southampton

As Leeds United also seem to have discovered, there aren’t many strong managerial candidates available right now, so someone like Selles – who knows the Saints well – is probably the safest option given the circumstances.

Leeds recently released an official statement revealing that Michael Skubala, Manager of their Under-21 side, would remain in charge of the first-team on an interim basis as the search continues.

It feels very possible that the 40-year-old will stay in charge until at least the end of the season, and Southampton also seem set to do likewise with Selles as they face issues in their search to replace Jones.
