In 2022, Shaquille O’Neal openly discussed what he would have done if NBA Hall of Famer Charles Barkley was on the verge of leaving “Inside the NBA” to join the controversial LIV Golf circuit.
At the time, LIV Golf was aggressively recruiting high-profile figures both on and off the course, and Charles Barkley’s potential involvement drew significant attention despite his longstanding role as a beloved broadcaster.
O’Neal’s reaction was defined by personal loyalty and understanding, capturing his perspective on the situation with a mixture of humour and respect.

Shaquille O’Neal explained his stance on Charles Barkley and LIV Golf
O’Neal addressed the possibility of Barkley joining LIV Golf in comments reported by USA Today, expressing support irrespective of controversy.
“No. Charles is a dear friend. I would’ve supported him every which way. Charles is one of those legends, like Bill Russell, that didn’t make a lot of money playing,” Shaq said.
He added: “So if a chance comes up like this at this age that’s legal, controversial but legal, you gotta look at it. If he had accepted it, I wouldn’t be mad. And if Charles had left? You’d still have me.”
O’Neal’s comments came at a time when LIV Golf was building momentum by signing major names and attracting attention for its deep pockets and connections to the Saudi-backed Public Investment Fund.
His emphasis was less on the politics of the tour itself and more on his friendship with Barkley and respect for his freedom to pursue opportunities.
Charles Barkley’s talks with LIV Golf ultimately ended in staying with NBA broadcasting
In 2022, Barkley was indeed linked with LIV Golf in discussions that included meeting with its officials and even participating in a LIV Golf pro-am event.
Reports from the time indicated that Barkley was in talks to potentially join the new tour in a broadcasting capacity, and he did meet with LIV Golf CEO Greg Norman as part of those conversations.
However, after weighing the options, Barkley ultimately chose to remain with the NBA broadcasting world, including his role on “Inside the NBA.”
Barkley’s choice preserved one of the most iconic on-air chemistry duos in sports media, alongside Shaquille O’Neal, Kenny Smith, and Ernie Johnson on the long-running studio show.
The episode remains a notable moment in sports media history, illustrating how even off-course opportunities that involve huge money can be weighed against legacy, loyalty, and a broadcaster’s own priorities.
